Visitor Procedure

All visitors must enter by the main entrance at the center of the building and report to the school office. Visitors are required to present a NC ID or NC Driver's License, login using the Ident-I-Kid computerized system and to wear a visitor's badge while in the building. This is to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Directions

Directions from US-29 South (Greensboro): 

  • Take US-29 North.

  • Take the US-29-BR ramp toward Reidsville / US-158 W / NC87 N.

  • Turn right onto Elm Grove Church Road (next to the graveyard).

  • Turn right onto Mizpah Church Road.

  • Turn left onto NC-87.

  • The school is on the left past the ostrich farm.

 

Directions from US-29 North (Eden):

  • Take US-29 South.

  • Take NC-87 / Barnes Street exit (150).

  • Turn left onto Barnes Street which becomes NC-87.

  • The school is on the right about three miles.

School Hours

The school day for students is 7:45 to 2:45. No student is to arrive before 7:30 without the principal's permission. Any student arriving after 7:45 will be considered tardy.  Parents must accompany students entering school after 7:45 to sign in at the front desk by office personnel using the card system. Students must take a tardy pass to enter the classroom.  ALL STUDENTS will receive breakfast and lunch at NO COST. Adult meals will also be available. Adult breakfast will cost TBD and an adult lunch will cost $3.75. Parents are asked to respect teacher planning time in the morning and refrain from entering the classroom until 7:30.

 

Parents must report to the office to sign their child out of school if they are picking them up before the 2:45 dismissal. No students will be allowed to check out after 2:00.  Students must be picked up by 2:45. Students need to stay until 11:25 in order to be counted present for the entire day.

The Williamsburg Community in the southeastern section of Rockingham County is proud to be the site of the first public free school in North Carolina which opened on January 20, 1840.  The school's first teacher was George W. Garrett, a large plantation owner who had gone to school at a military academy in Virginia. In 1839, when the Common School Law was enacted by the General Assembly, Garrett provided Rockingham County with an appropriate school building on his land with the provision that he would be hired as the teacher. Garrett was said to be a strict disciplinarian who kept a large bundle of switches stacked in the corner of the school room, ready for use. Boys, ages six to twenty-one, attended the one-room, one-teacher school and from accounts passed down in the Garrett family, those switches didn't stop the boys' mischievous behavior. One cold winter morning some of the older boys hid in the building and overpowered Garrett as he entered. They tossed him and his switches into a pond near the school.

Garland Paschal , a former Williamsburg principal, revealed the historical marker at the dedication recognizing Williamsburg as the first public school in the state.

Before moving to its present location on Highway 87 in October 2003, Williamsburg School was located on Mizpah Church Road. That location was established in 1970 when Williamsburg Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School were consolidated into one school.  The pre-consolidation Williamsburg School which opened in 1935, was located on Highway 87 South and housed grades 1-8. Roosevelt School, the site of the last Williamsburg School on Mizpah Church Road, opened in 1950 and also housed grades 1-8.

​

Williamsburg Elementary has approximately 540 students in grades kindergarten through fifth. In addition, there is one pre-school classroom funded by Rockingham County Schools.  Also housed in the building is one Head Start classroom.

 

As a Title I school, Williamsburg receives additional federal funds to provide extra instructional support for the students. This funding makes it possible to reduce class size in many of the grade levels which helps the students receive more individualized assistance.

 

When the new building opened in 2003, personnel from many different schools came together to form the new Williamsburg School. These dedicated, well-qualified individuals work together to provide a stable learning environment for the children of Williamsburg School.

At present we have teachers pursuing National Board Certification and Master's Degrees, as well as teacher assistants working on their teaching degrees.

The Williamsburg PTA is involved with many different activities to help raise money for the school.  A long time favorite and one of the most successful fundraisers is the annual Harvest Festival which is held the last Saturday in September.   The whole community enjoys the Festival's barbecue/hotdog supper, country store, games, raffles and auction.  

 

Through this fundraiser, the PTA is able to support the school.

  • Lunch for Teachers and Staff – Teacher Appreciation

  • Skating at Roll-A-Bout for 3rd - 5th grade students that read 150+ books

  • Three Utility Carts

  • Vacuum Cleaner and Supplies

  • Storage Cart for Headphones in Computer Lab

  • Donation to RIF – Reading Is Fundamental which provides three free books per year per student

Parents are welcome to have lunch with their children. School system guidelines do not allow food items from fast food chains to be brought into the cafeteria.  Also, please do not send soft drinks for a child's lunch.  Milk, water, or juice are preferable.
